As a writer Derek was represented in Los Angeles with a manager (writer AVP) and separately with an agent, both briefly and in particular due to a very intriguing project entitled, The Confessional, with the agent asking for a call by pg. 52. This script has been through many hands, impressing execs and producers from Cross Creek to a producer involved with John Wick starring Keanu Reeves. She would offer to forward the script to a colleague at the renowned CAA agency in L.A.
Derek has also had a project in development two different times with a total of four companies and at one point when the deal was about to go to the table, the CEO of a particular company was arrested by the FBI shelving all projects immediately. A few people in the industry including noted producers and actor Michael Ironside were involved. A very frustrating time after much work.
His scripts have been very well received and strongly considered/ discussed by such companies as Dimension, Focus Features, Silver Pictures, Millennium Films, Original Films, Mandalay Pictures and more. To this day he remains in touch with several people who are always interested in reviewing his work. (In selling a script, there has to be a unanimous decision with any board where in many instances, he came close with another sale.) He hasn't written since 2014 and at times, shops the last few recent projects. (NOTE: Derek was known as a writer by his legal last name, Stacey.) Below is a note (Miramax) from Nicholas Phillips who later became head of Screen Gems.
Derek also co-wrote (and script-supervised ) the award-winning short comedy inspired by his past comedy entitled Airknob, co-written and directed by Nathan Fleet. (The director also played the lead very well in this.) The project was in festivals and sold elsewhere and can be viewed on YT. Derek's scripts include; Desolation (also director), With Intent (director), The Snowman, Black Rose, The Black Donnellys (the first writer to pursue this story which went into development), The Confessional, The Roman Line, The Resolution, The Aura File, Atmosfear and many more. (Note: a 2017 teaser titled The Snowman with similar themes appeared. The book appeared in 2007, Derek's script was in '98. Derek has experienced many moments similar to this with concepts/ ideas and dialogue appearing years after his writings - the film even includes M. Fassbender, an actor Derek reached out to for attachment to The Confessional.) Other similar moments had to do with the t.v. show Dexter and I Know What You Did Last Summer. As a writer Derek regularly dealt with producers/ agents by phone trying to get deals done; some actors included Rutger Hauer (at one point his reps were interested if the producer was-he wasn't after Rutger stalled on his past project), Sean Bean, Ewan McGregor and more. Long before anyone Derek also had a script idea for the brilliant Montgomery Clift. Years later that would also come to fruition. In of 2016 he also had an interest in writing about the Golden State Killer. In 2019 Derek will possibly consider writing again. IN 2023 Derek started a parody called JOHN DICK: The Final Bibliography--a spoof/ parody.

A very early on, positive reply from Mandalay and Miramax (Nick Phillips would go on to helm Sony Pictures years after this.) Below is a partial, legitimate coverage page with regards to a horror/ thriller from 2007, assessed in L.A. via my management company at the time.
